This episode stated/suggested that (in contrast to care homes) ”there were no [Covid-19] outbreaks in prisons, as far as I’m aware”. Actually there were both Covid-19 infections and deaths in UK prisons, however formal Covid-19 mitigations were put in place. These webpages describe some of the mitigations: HM Prison and Probation Service COVID-19 statistics (monthly): In the (final) February 2023 statistics webpage it states that: * ”307 prisoners and supervised individuals have died having tested positive within 60 days of death or where there was a clinical assessment COVID-19 was a contributory factor in their death” * ”49,510 prisoners or children in custody have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic” * ”The core tenet of HMPPS’s prison strategy, building on UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) advice and learning developed in managing an early outbreak of the virus, was the implementation of effective isolation, reverse cohorting of new entrants to custody, and shielding of vulnerable prisoners” Quotes taken from here (worth reading the whole page): BBC News also carried stories about prison outbreaks . ”Coronavirus outbreaks in prisons across England are believed to lie behind several regions’ spikes in infection rates, causing ”a degree of alarm” according to health officials. ... BBC analysis of neighbourhood-level data found five of the places to have recorded the highest infection rates in the country recently all contained prisons.”
